Benefits of Sensory Toys
Sensory toys aim to stimulate our senses which are sight, touch, smell, hearing, and taste. Sensory toys are a great way to engage the senses in a controlled way.
Sensory toys are one of the most effective tools to help neurodiverse young people in their day to day life. They help young people to calm down, relax, concentrate and focus. They can also help to decrease fear and discomfort.
There are a variety of sensory toys available that produce different types of sensory feedback. When your young person is busy trying to get the sensations they naturally seek, they are distracted from everything else around them. Although it may seem logical to think playing with any kind of toy is distracting, it actually gives the young person the sensory input they need which allows them to focus and self regulate better.
We often get asked what the "best" sensory toy to buy is, but there is no such thing as the best sensory toy because each young person is individual. They will also seek different input for different situations, so it's good to get a few different sensory toys and figure out what they like best by simple trial and error.
If you don't know where to start, consider one of our sensory boxes which have a good mix of sensory toys. This can help narrow down which are best for your young person.
